Devoted golfers can play new courses throughout the years and never encounter a layout that makes them want to come back for another round. Today’s golfers want a course that delivers an experience. They want golf holes that are unique and memorable, putting surfaces that roll true, and course conditions that allow for a satisfying and playable round of golf.
Located just south of Orlando is one of the area’s hidden gems. When it comes to a golf course that is fun, fair, challenging for players, and one that is worth many return trips to play, Remington Golf Club fits the bill.
Situated on the east side of Kissimmee, Remington Golf Club is a short 15-minute ride down the Florida Turnpike from downtown Orlando and just 10 minutes from the International Airport.
During its existence, Remington has quickly earned a reputation of being a golf course that provides players with outstanding course conditions throughout the year, and greens that just might be the best in Central Florida. Players will be treated to a fantastic Florida-style layout on 18-holes of championship caliber.
“What makes Remington unique is the course conditions and the layout are easily compared to the best courses in Florida, but it is priced where all golfers can afford to play it,” Remington’s general manager, Barbie Belew said.
The Remington Golf Club opened in 1996 and was designed by one of Central Florida’s premier architect firms, the Clifton Golf Design Group. This course design is truly a versatile layout that will challenge golf professionals and provide a fun-filled afternoon for the higher-handicapped player.
Golf Digest Magazine, for its annual “Places to Play” issue for the 2001-02 golf season, awarded Remington a four-star rating. The facility has become a staple course for locals to play and a “must stop” for tourists who visit the Central Florida region.
Paying attention to detail and providing excellent customer service is the focal point for the entire staff at Remington. Each golfer receives outstanding service from the time they drop off their golf bags until the last putt falls.
The grounds crew takes pride in the fantastic year-round course conditions Reming-ton offers. In particular, are the well-kept greens at this layout. All 18 holes and the practice putting green are cut with walk mowers. Walk-mowed greens certainly translate into outstanding putting surfaces each time players visit Remington Golf Club.
Playing the course begins the real fun at Remington. Its fairways allow for generous landing areas off the tee; however, some greens are tightly guarded so precision iron play will certainly be essential to good scoring.
The key to having a most enjoyable round at Remington is selecting one of the five sets of tees to play from. The black tees extend 7,111 yards with a course rating of 73.9. The yellow tees stretch 6,769 yards and have a course rating of 72.5. The greens play 6,328 yards; the blue 5,876, and the white play a sporty 5,178 yards. Players are encouraged to bite off as much as they can handle.
Remington offers a nice mix of holes that are different and very challenging. Five of the 10 par-4s play over 400 yards, and four of the par-4s must be played strategically playing less than 380 yards. The par-5s also vary in distance with two offering risk-reward opportunities of going for the green in two bold shots.
A solid round of golf will be decided on how well golfers play Remington’s par-3s. Water looms on two of the holes and all four of the greens are well-guarded by bunkers. They vary in distance, playing from 189 yards to a whopping 222 yards from the black tee positions.
While it ranks as the fifth hardest hole by handicap on the course’s scorecard, the. eigth at Remington many times proves to be the most difficult on the course for most players. It’s the second shot on this hole that will test you. This par-4 plays 402 yards from the the tips. A well-placed tee shot down the left side of the fairway will make the approach much easier. The green is a half-island, raised out of the water by railroad ties, making it the most difficult green to hit in regulation. Water protects the entire right side of the putting surface, and a sand bunker is positioned towards the back left side. Any tee shot hit down the right side of the fairway will make for a nerve-racking shot over water to the flag. A pin position on the right side of the green makes any iron shot difficult no matter what part of the fairway you’ll be hitting from. Add some wind on this hole and it just might be one of the toughest in Central Florida.
Playing for position off the tee is essential when you get to the par-5, 580-yard 13th. This hole doglegs hard to the left, so a tee ball down the right side of the fairway will help players negotiate around a stand of trees that certainly can cause some problems with the second shot. Any drive down the left side will force players to hit over these tall trees or attempt to play through them in order to set up the approach shot to the green. This green is well-guarded by bunkers and is one of the most undulated on the course. Getting on the putting surface in three shots doesn’t guarantee a par.
Unlike so many courses today, the biggest thrill at Remington is the course itself. The golfing experience is the number-one concern of the staff. Being owned and managed by golf veterans means keeping the course in what the club’s director of operations Mark Farrow calls “tournament conditions” all the time to allow for a great golfing experience.
Remington Golf Club is the perfect setting for a corporate outing or banquet. The stately clubhouse can accommodate up to 150 people in its dining room. Inside there are also complete men’s and ladies’ lockerrooms, a fully-stocked golf professional shop and a restaurant that offers breakfast and lunch menus.
