MetroWest Golf ClubThere are many meanings of the word “Playability,” most of which apply to Orlando’s MetroWest Golf Club, which celebrates its Platinum (20th) Anniversary in 2007 with the promise of the most playable experience in the history of this central Florida. Just two miles from Universal Orlando Resort and near the Convention Center and many other Orlando attractions, MetroWest’s location makes it one of the area’s most, well, playable courses.

Playability:

Capable of, or suitable for, being played

MetroWest Golf Club, Orlando, FlThe only Orlando layout designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones, Sr., MetroWest carries a 4-Star Rating from Golf Digest’s 2006-2007 Best Places to Play. From original layouts like Peachtree in Atlanta (with Bobby Jones) to Mauna Kea in Hawaii or Dorado Beach in Puerto Rico, to re-designs like Oakland Hills, Baltusrol, Olympic, Southern Hills, Congressional and Oak Hill, Jones loved to work with unique pieces of real estate, like MetroWest. Boasting a more traditional layout than many you’ll find in Florida, with many spring-fed lakes, mature native trees, expansive fairways and large, very undulating greens, MetroWest Golf Club also has something very unique to Orlando golf, hills.

How many other Orlando-area golf courses feature 100-foot elevation changes, with the 13th tee representing one of the highest points in metro Orlando? How can a course be tough enough to be chosen annually as a U.S. Open qualifier and Champion’s Tour qualifying course, as host of the Florida State Amateur and Florida Public Links Championship, and yet be one of the most popular courses for corporate and charitable outings in the entire Orlando area?

The answer is simple: Playability.

Playability:

To move or operate freely within a bounded space

MetroWest Golf Club, Orlando, FlMetroWest’s four fabulous par-5s are ranked as the four toughest holes on the course. The #1 handicapped fourth hole is a three-shotter for all but the very longest hitters, with Jones’ signature bunkering in evidence with a cluster of five bunkers on the right hand side of the landing area and another collection of bunkers near the green. The seventh is the shortest of the par-5s, reachable if the winds are favorable. At the 10th, bunkers again intrude on the landing areas of all three shots while the signature 14th features fabulous views of downtown Orlando, and the MetroWest community, all the way down the hole, but before you think about trying to reach it in two, remember that the green has water surrounding it left and rear and a menacing bunker short-right.

The par-3s will require you to hit four different clubs off their tees, depending on the pin positions. All of the par-3s are well-bunkered, especially in front. And among the variety of par-4s is the signature ninth, a great risk/reward hole with the course’s largest lake stretching along the entire left side of the hole, stretching it out from 326 yards to 405. Check out the plaque where John Daly drove the green with a 336-yard carry from the gold tees over the water. “Where Orlando” magazine named the ninth, nicknamed the “John Daly Challenge,” Orlando’s #1 “must play” hole. And here’s a little playing tip- if you’re 2-down coming to the par-3 17th, you’re still alive. The final two holes are brutal.

Playability:

To be received or accepted

The most important accolades come from those who have the choice of where to play, and choose you, like the USGA, FSGA and PGA TOUR and all of the charitable organizations and business outings that come to MetroWest annually. Yet with all of those events on the docket, you can also count on a four-hour round when you come out to play. MetroWest is one of the few courses anywhere to receive a pace-of-play commendation by Golf Digest.

Playability:

To occupy oneself in amusement, sport or other recreation

There are many ways to do that at MetroWest, outside of a wonderful 18, or 36-holes. Where was the last golf course you played that offered to wash, wax and detail your car during your round, for a very reasonable fee. Besides that unique service, MetroWest offers valet parking, shuttles to Universal Orlando Resort, GPS on their carts and electronic leaderboards for your outings. The recently-renovated 27,000 square-foot clubhouse is perfect weddings, banquets, meetings, luncheons and, of course, golf outings. The primary banquet room seats 150 guests and there’s a smaller 50-guest side room for smaller gatherings. The acclaimed Westerly’s Restaurant and the new Sundance Tavern sports bar offer a relaxing atmosphere to relive the glories of your golf experience.

And if you want that experience to be improved the next time you play, make an appointment with Director of the MetroWest Golf Academy Tom Creavy and his staff of PGA professionals. Creavy counts among his pupils LPGA great Se Ri Pak and PGA TOUR pro Danny Ellis. But whether you’ve got professional aspirations, or are just beginning the game, their combination of unique instruction, innovative programs and the many amenities of their practice facility will help you meet your golf goals.

And just to make sure those of you who live in Orlando don’t forget the great value of this playable layout, there’s the Golf Aliance Club offering special rates and discounts (on and off the course) to MetroWest and sister-course Falcon’s Fire.
